LAARC VIP7: What about Thursdays?

About my museum job, Archaeology, Archaeology in Action, Blogs, LAARC, LAARC VIP

Anyone following our blogs will know that our current Volunteer Inclusion Project is now based in the Archaeology in Action gallery. Our volunteers are packing pottery and chatting to visitors about what they’re doing, every Monday, Tuesday & Friday until Dec 10th. (for more pictures click here: Flickr)

On Wednesdays we’re back in the archive working on finds with students from both the University of the 3rd Age & Mossbourne Academy 6th Form. They’re recording their work with photos which they’ll be putting together to create short films. More about them here: Wednesdays

But… What about Thursdays?

Well… Thursday is the day we move boxes!

It starts with me and Glynn getting in early, to load up the trolley full of the next batch of 20-30 boxes of pottery to work on in the gallery that week.

Once loaded it’s down to the car park, where the museum’s porter/van driver is waiting for us. As he and LAARC’s security guard Sami are tip-top blokes, they usually give me a hand in loading the van with the new boxes.

And then we take to the streets of London!

It’s not too long before we’re at the Museum of London where we have to load up the trolley once again, take the new batch of boxes to our holding store, swap these with the boxes that have been processed by visitors and volunteers that week and then load these “done” boxes back into the van.

And then it’s back to Archive!

More unloading from the van to the trolley follows, until we finally unload the boxes one last time back onto the shelves they call home.

And I bet you thought Thursday was our day off huh?
