This reveals a concave pattern of wear (rounded pipe facet) to the occlusal surfaces of the left maxillary lateral incisor and canine, with a corresponding wear pattern to the left mandibular canine and first premolar. These notches represent wear from the longstanding, habitual holding of clay pipes between the teeth. Analysis of post medieval skeletons in London has found a number of individuals exhibiting evidence of such facets, often these are in association with dental stains, most likely associated with inhaling smoke from burning pipe tobacco. This evidence suggests that pipe smoking was common amongst some populations of London. This was the principle method of tobacco consumption during most of the nineteenth century.</description>
